How To's
- Ensure the tooth is clean and dry.
- Isolate the tooth (rubber dam or cotton roll).
- Remove excess plaque.
- Dry the affected area with a cotton pellet.
- Place 1–2 drops of SilverSense SDF into a disposable dappen dish.
Tinted blue for increased visibility. - Apply SilverSense SDF directly to the affected tooth surface with a Benda Micro applicator. Reapply until the lesion stays wet.
For approximal surfaces, apply to embrasures. SilverSense SDF will wick into the lesion. - Allow to air dry for 60 seconds. Do not rinse.
Remove excess SilverSense SDF with a cotton pellet.
The ADA recommends fluoride varnish for high-risk patients. The patients you treat with SilverSense SDF are high-risk and should receive fluoride varnish treatment on all teeth.1, 2

The desensitized tooth can be restored now or at a later date, depending on your schedule, but know that you have protected the tooth and the patient, and made them more comfortable.

FAQs
This depends on your patient and your schedule. If the tooth is being restored immediately, then no application is likely necessary. If the tooth cannot be restored during the initial appointment but will be restored within a few weeks, then apply SilverSense SDF immediately, and only one application will be needed. If you are waiting long-term to restore the tooth, apply SilverSense SDF every six months until the restoration can be completed. These guidelines will help protect the patient’s teeth and desensitize the application site.
No, SilverSense SDF will not turn your patients’ teeth black. Healthy dentin and enamel will not be stained, only infected lesions will turn darker. As you know, infected lesions in most cases are already dark; SDF may turn the lesion darker. The misconception about SDF ‘turning teeth black’ comes from pediatric cases with full coronal involvement.
Yes, you can, and should, restore the tooth after desensitizing with SilverSense SDF. Researchers report that SDF does not negatively affect bond strength1 and restorative treatment is necessary to restore the form and function of the tooth, eliminate food traps, and improve cleanability and aesthetics. Keep in mind that free silver may lead to darkening of the restoration and/or margins after light curing. There are a few ways to address this issue including clean margins, sandwich technique, and opaquers.
Yes, you should! Research shows that a fluoride varnish application is needed and beneficial to help protect the rest of your patient’s teeth. What’s more, a great-tasting varnish like Centrix FluoroDose will help mask the ammonia taste your patients might notice upon application.
