D/Sense Crystal

Dual-Action Crystal Precipitate Desensitizer Gel

$115.99

D/Sense® Crystal is a one-step, dual-action desensitizer gel and cavity liner that is fast-acting and long-lasting. Calcium oxalate and potassium nitrate crystals penetrate deeply to occlude the tubules and seal the dentin surface with a continuous, acid-resistant complex (typically less than 3 microns thick). Great for hypersensitive patients.

How To's

  1. Remove cap from syringe and securely attach a SofNeedle™ foam tip.
  2. To improve patient comfort, warm syringe to body temperature by holding under warm running water for 10 seconds.
  3. IMPORTANT! For accurate control, hold syringe within the palm of the hand. Squeeze the plunger with the base of the thumb. DO NOT push the plunger with the tip of your thumb.
  4. Check syringe flow. Test on a pad before intra-oral use. Squeeze syringe with slow, steady pressure to wet foam tip.
  5. Gently rub and saturate the dentin surface for 20 seconds. Be sure to saturate the area well. D/Sense Crystal may be applied to moist or dry dentin.
  6. Use a gentle stream of air to dry the surface for 30 seconds. If not using compressed air, allow to air dry for 2 minutes. You will see a frosty white precipitate.
  7. Above procedure may be repeated if needed. Dispose SofNeedle after use. Recap syringe.

FAQs

Should D/Sense Crystal be used with glass ionomer cements under crowns?

No. The oxalate crystals formed when using DSense Crystal inhibit the cement from penetrating the tubules, which may reduce the mechanical adhesion. But a doctor can use Glu/Sense which will not inhibit the adhesion of glass ionomer cements.

When do you etch when using D/Sense Crystal?

Apply D/Sense Crystal BEFORE etching. You apply it directly from the syringe to the affected dentin. Attach the SofNeedle tip to the syringe, wet the foam head by squeezing the plunger, and apply liberally. Let set undisturbed for at least 30 seconds while the crystal precipitate forms. Then, dry with a gentle stream of air.

All these steps must be taken BEFORE you etch. When the solution contacts dentin, it reacts with the calcium to precipitate micro-fine crystals. These crystals penetrate and block the open tubules, sealing them with a continuous coating. The etch will remove the crystals coating the dentin surface [about 3 microns thick], but not the crystals inside the tubules.

What is the difference between D/Sense Crystal and Glu/Sense?

Glu/Sense desensitizer contains HEMA and Glutaraldehyde. Either one of these can cause allergic reactions. In addition, Glutaraldehyde can cause chemical burns. GLUMA works by “precipitating proteins”. The HEMA acts as a tubule filler. If you look at a SEM photo of dentin treated with GLUMA, you will not see anything. The desensitizing effect results from the nerve endings no longer responding to stimuli.

With D/Sense Crystal, there is a chemical reaction between the dentin and the D/Sense Crystal liquid. The formula is acidic, and reacts with the calcium to produce tiny crystals of calcium oxalate and potassium nitrate (a FDA approved desensitizing agent, commonly used in OTC toothpastes.) The crystals block and seal the tubules completely, and the potassium nitrate adds another level of desensitization. A look at an SEM photo of the surface will see complete coverage of the dentin with a micro-thin layer of crystals (approx 3 microns thick). A cross section SEM photo shows the crystals formed within the dentin tubules. D/Sense Crystal is kind to soft tissues, and its’ acid-resistant crystal structure provides long-term protection, without the use of HEMA or Glutaraldehyde.
